Seattle appoints former LinkedIn, Airbnb data science manager to be city’s first AI officer

Seattle has appointed Lisa Qian as the city’s first artificial intelligence officer. Qian brings extensive experience in data science management from her previous roles at LinkedIn and Airbnb.

The Seattle Information Technology Department announced this new position, highlighting its importance in promoting responsible and innovative AI use within public services. The AI officer will play a key role in ensuring that Seattle leverages the transformative capabilities of artificial intelligence while adhering to the city’s values and commitment to responsible technology.

Rob Lloyd, Seattle’s chief technology officer, mentioned that Qian will collaborate with him, various city departments, the IT executive team, and city leadership to advance essential initiatives. These include establishing the city’s AI technical architecture and governance framework, developing AI training programs, and aligning city services with a responsible-use framework.

Qian has over a decade of experience and a research-oriented background. She holds a Ph.D. in applied physics from Stanford University, along with dual bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering and physics from Rice University. Before this role, she served as a senior manager of data science at LinkedIn, as well as in leadership positions at Convoy and Airbnb.

In her previous roles, Qian developed quality standards for generative AI products, created AI models for fraud detection, and built data science teams.

Qian expressed her enthusiasm for the role, stating, “I’m deeply honored to take on this role.
