Dashcam footage reveals the early moments of an attack at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach, Sydney. The video, recorded from a moving vehicle, shows a man in a purple shirt confronting one of the attackers, Sajid Akram, near a Hyundai Elantra while wrestling a firearm from him. Another bystander appears to assist.
As the vehicle filming passes, the footage shifts to a rear view, displaying a black and white flag across the Hyundai’s windscreen. The man in the purple shirt is still holding the weapon.
BBC Monitoring’s jihadist media correspondent, Mina al-Lami, has identified the flag as the “Uqab,” a symbol often associated with jihadist groups, particularly the Islamic State.
There are no signs of AI manipulation in the footage. Toward the end, the man in the purple shirt is seen being shot, an event also captured in a longer video documenting the attack.
The footage then transitions to an aerial shot showing the bodies of the two bystanders next to the car, identified by Australian media as Boris and Sofia Gurman.
The individual who uploaded the dashcam footage noted on social media that the media has not fully covered the bravery displayed by the couple.
