OpenAI is testing a new feature for ChatGPT called “Skills,” which will be similar to Claude’s feature of the same name.
Until now, ChatGPT has utilized GPTs, which are specifically designed to meet user needs. In contrast, Claude Skills consist of folder-based instructions that equip Claude AI with particular abilities, workflows, and specialized knowledge.
For instance, Claude has a frontend design skill plugin that enhances its understanding of interfaces while assisting in coding web applications.
According to Anthropic, the features of Skills are as follows:
– Composable: Skills can be stacked together, with Claude automatically identifying and coordinating necessary skills.
– Portable: Skills maintain a uniform format across all Claude applications, allowing for one-time development and use in various settings.
– Efficient: Skills load only what is necessary when required.
– Powerful: Skills can incorporate executable code for tasks where traditional programming is more effective than token generation.
ChatGPT is expected to introduce a similar feature, also called Skills. Reports indicate that Skills in ChatGPT are codenamed “hazelnuts” and will be accessible as slash commands, featuring a Skills editor and an option to convert a custom GPT into a skill.
While the rollout timeline for Skills is not yet clear, a release is tentatively planned for January 2026.
