Internet Slams Neeraj Ghaywan For Saying Homebound Is Incomplete Without Janhvi Kapoor

The audience expressed discontent when Janhvi Kapoor won the Best Actress Award for Homebound. Neeraj Ghaywan, the film’s director, stated that his work, which is close to being nominated for an Oscar, would not have been possible without her. This remark disappointed many online.

After Janhvi’s win, Neeraj shared his happiness, saying, “I’m feeling so happy to see Janhvi getting this award. It means a lot to me. Without you, this film would have been impossible. You bring the emotional core of the film, and seeing you take this award and accept it with such grace, it’s just sheer happiness.”

Critics on social media accused Neeraj of overstating Janhvi’s contribution, noting that her role was less significant compared to the two male leads. One Reddit user commented, “Cause Karan Johar wouldn’t have put money in it.” Another remarked on the snubbing of Kriti, who has delivered three notable performances recently.

One person pointed out that Janhvi’s role in Homebound lasted only 10 to 15 minutes, questioning the merit of her award and suggesting it should have gone to Yami Gautam for Haq. Another user speculated that if the film wins an Oscar, Janhvi would be prominently featured, even though the story centers on Ishaan and Vishal.

Another netizen highlighted the irony of Neeraj, known for anti-caste films, hiring a product of nepotism, suggesting that Karan might have funded the film based on the condition of casting Janhvi.

When accepting her award, Janhvi expressed her gratitude to Neeraj, stating, “I’m extremely grateful to Neeraj Sir for seeing something in me that, on most days, I can’t see in myself. I think this man is a national treasure. He is hands down my favourite person. He makes me feel so seen.” She added that Neeraj has the unique ability to make people feel recognized, a skill she admires.

Released in 2025, Homebound is a critically acclaimed film written and directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, following his previous work, Masaan. Produced by Dharma Productions, the film features a notable production team, including Karan Johar and Martin Scorsese as an executive producer.

Homebound has been shortlisted for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards, becoming only the fifth Indian film to achieve this recognition. The story, based on real-life events, follows two young men from marginalized communities as they pursue their career aspirations.

The movie stars Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, with Khatter and Jethwa receiving acclaim for their powerful performances that added emotional depth to the film.
