Despite being a key player in the development of 5G technology, the Chinese tech giant Huawei has been barred from accessing it. The U.S. government placed Huawei on its “entity list” due to allegations of spying, which restricts the company from obtaining U.S. technology without a special license.
As a result, modern Huawei smartphones lack 5G capabilities. The last flagship model to support 5G was the Mate 40 Pro, released in 2020. Even the new Huawei P60 Pro, which features a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor that is 5G-ready, only supports 4G.
However, there are reports suggesting a potential change. Some industry suppliers in China claim that the U.S. has permitted Qualcomm to sell 5G chips to Huawei. This move could be aimed at boosting Qualcomm’s sales.
If these reports are accurate, the inclusion of 5G in future Huawei devices could enhance their competitiveness. The Mate 60 Series, expected to launch in the second half of the year, is rumored to feature a 5G-ready Qualcomm chip.
