Western Canada’s first electronic storage device detection dog has been assisting Winnipeg police investigators with the internet child exploitation unit since June by locating potential evidence.
Willow, a Labrador retriever, is specially trained to detect chemical compounds found in electronic devices such as laptops, cellphones, and memory cards. Recently, she discovered several digital storage devices during a warrant search at a residence in Osborne Village. This search was prompted by reports of child sexual abuse images uploaded to a social media platform.
A 31-year-old man has been arrested and charged with multiple offenses related to child sexual abuse and exploitation material. The police have confiscated the devices for further analysis.
According to her handler, Sgt. Kerrie Webb, Willow is adept at locating devices that may otherwise be overlooked. Webb noted, “She definitely has an impact on our warrants. She finds things that we likely would not have found. Typically, what our suspects most don’t want us to find is what she’s capable of finding in hidden spaces.”
Willow has been involved in about 10 warrant operations for the internet child exploitation unit, as well as assisting with cases for the counter exploitation unit, organized crime unit, and even the RCMP.
Willow is the first electronic storage device detection dog in Western Canada. Webb anticipates that such dogs will become more common in the area in the future. Willow was donated to the Winnipeg Police Service by Our Rescue, a U.S.-based anti-sex trafficking organization.
In addition to her detection capabilities, Willow is a certified comfort dog, providing emotional support to both her colleagues and members of the public who may be victims of crime. Webb remarked, “On a daily basis, what my team has to see, hear, and read can take a toll on their mental health, so having her in the office is beneficial.”
Willow can also sit with victims during statement-taking, offering comfort by resting her head on their laps. She is available to attend court if needed, according to Webb. “She’s been a great addition. She definitely brings joy to our office every single day,” Webb said. “She’s just a sweet soul.”
