According to a recent tip from Jerrold_Tech on Weibo, HUAWEI is reportedly developing its own CMOS image sensor. The development process is said to encompass everything from wafer to chip, with innovations in certain processes, such as layer thinning, that may rival mainstream back-illuminated processes.
HUAWEI has a long-standing partnership with Sony, producing some of the best smartphone cameras available. The HUAWEI P60 Pro, for instance, utilizes Sony sensors along with HUAWEI’s XMAGE technology, which has replaced Leica.
However, HUAWEI has not yet confirmed this information, and it remains a rumor at this stage. There is currently no information available regarding the technical performance of the sensor. If the development is successful, it could enhance HUAWEI’s self-reliance, allowing for better customization and tuning with its own ISP and chip.
