The EU was the first to require Apple to open its ecosystem, and several countries have since followed this approach. Brazil is the latest to implement such changes, as Apple has agreed to allow iPhone users to download and purchase apps and digital services outside of its App Store.
This agreement was made with Brazil’s Administrative Council for Economic Defense, which had been investigating Apple on this issue. The Council has approved Apple’s proposed remedies, and the company has 105 days to implement changes regarding app and service purchases on iOS in Brazil.
The agreement is binding for three years, allowing developers to process payments outside of the App Store and permitting third-party app stores as well. The investigation in Brazil began in December 2022, indicating that it took considerable time to reach this resolution.
