Samsung’s Galaxy XR headset recently launched at a price of $1,799.99, significantly lower than Apple’s Vision Pro headset. However, its repairability is a concern for potential buyers. With the increasing costs of technology, repairing devices can be a cost-effective solution if issues arise. The main barriers to DIY repairs are the tools required and the device’s repairability.
iFixit has disassembled the Samsung Galaxy XR to assess its repairability for average users. Findings indicate that it is currently the most repairable XR headset available. Although this status may not last, as future manufacturers might aim to improve upon its design. For now, the Galaxy XR offers a favorable option for consumers.
During iFixit’s teardown, it was discovered that the headset incorporates several user-friendly design features. Notably, Samsung employs Philips head screws throughout, eliminating the need for specialized tools. A standard Phillips head screwdriver can be easily obtained. The components are generally straightforward to disassemble, although it may be time-consuming. Replacing the battery pack is relatively simple, and the face cushion and light seals are easily detachable due to their magnetic design.
However, Samsung’s stance on consumer repairs is concerning. Inside the headset, there is a “Void If Tampered” sticker that would void the warranty if users attempt repairs. While this practice may be legally questionable under Federal Trade Commission rules in the US, it illustrates a troubling trend in consumer electronics.
