Rumor: HUAWEI P70 to use more local components including a self-developed camera sensor

According to a tipster on Weibo, HUAWEI is set to incorporate more local components in its upcoming P70 flagship smartphone, including a self-developed camera sensor.

The same source previously indicated that HUAWEI has been working on its own CMOS image sensor to enhance self-reliance and mitigate the impact of U.S. sanctions. The tipster also mentioned that HUAWEI’s contract with Sony for new supplies has not been renewed, leading to a depletion of the company’s image sensor stock.

Sony has been a long-time supplier of mobile camera sensors for HUAWEI, which has relied on these components for its high-quality camera phones. However, HUAWEI appears to have prepared adequately for this transition, as the quality of its P Series cameras is at stake.

If the rumors are accurate, HUAWEI could customize the new sensor to work optimally with its own image signal processor and chip. Currently, the HUAWEI P60 Pro remains the top-ranked camera phone according to DxOMark, despite being older than competitors like the Google Pixel 8 Pro and Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max.

The P70 flagship is expected to be officially announced in the first half of 2024. HUAWEI has not yet confirmed these details, so it is advisable to approach these claims with caution. Further information is not available at this time.
