The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has stated that various security agencies have concluded that drones and essential components manufactured in foreign countries present an unacceptable risk to U.S. national security.
The FCC has officially added foreign-produced unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and their critical components to its Covered List, based on a national security determination by the Executive Branch.
The ban only impacts new sales, meaning that individuals who already own foreign-made drones can continue to use them. Retailers are permitted to sell existing units that have received FCC approval; the ban applies solely to future models. Additionally, the Department of Defense or the Department of Homeland Security may authorize specific new models in the future.
DJI has responded by asserting that its products are among the safest and most secure available, supported by extensive reviews from U.S. government agencies and independent third parties. The company claims that concerns regarding its data security lack evidence and are instead driven by protectionist motives, which contradict the principles of an open market.
