Sony Encourages Developers to Update Low-Power Support for Upcoming PS6 Handheld

Sony’s PS6 handheld is not yet confirmed for market release, but recent leaks suggest that Sony is preparing for its launch. Reports indicate that the company is advising developers to implement low-power support in their games. This is not the first instance of rumors regarding a low-power mode for Sony’s consoles. Earlier in the year, it was speculated that the upcoming PS6 handheld would allow for the playing of PS5 games through such a mode, targeting performance levels between the ROG Ally X and PS4 Pro.

Implementing a low-power mode could enable the handheld to run resource-intensive games more efficiently, potentially extending battery life. Current handheld devices, with the exception of the Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Nintendo Switch, tend to have limited playtime when running modern games. A low-power mode for Sony’s new handheld would facilitate not just PS5 game compatibility but also enhance the device’s longevity between charges.

Recent leaks, particularly from a YouTube source, have disclosed that this low-power mode would involve lower resolution and reduced core count, as well as decreased clock speeds to accommodate new CPU architectures. The need for this low-power mode suggests that Sony may be planning for hardware that necessitates such capabilities.

Additionally, reports indicate that Sony is instructing developers to ensure that their games can run on only eight CPU threads. This further aligns with the low core count expected for the mode. The PS6 handheld is anticipated to run on 4 Zen 6c cores, which support 8 threads, supporting these emerging details.
