Commuters using the EDSA Busway can now pay their fares through GCash, as cashless payments have been officially introduced across selected busway units. Passengers can pay via QR code using GCash SoundPay, with the fare amount entered manually by the conductor based on the distance traveled.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) launched this payment method at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange as part of the government’s Automatic Fare Collection System proof of concept. This initiative aims to modernize public transport payments, providing commuters with faster and more flexible payment options.
Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Deputy Governor Mamerto Tangonan stated that the system benefits both passengers and operators by ensuring exact fare payments and direct remittance to bus companies. The setup also reduces cash handling and supports the broader push for standardized digital payments in public transportation.
GCash for Business Head Jong Layug emphasized the platform’s security, noting that the company continues to invest in fraud prevention and system protection. GCash SoundPay, a portable QR payment device, was first introduced in 2024 to support micro, small, and medium enterprises.
As of the initial rollout, 260 EDSA Busway units are equipped with GCash SoundPay devices. Commuters still have the option to pay in cash, but the addition of GCash offers a faster, cashless transaction alternative.
