LG Innotek plans to unveil a new type of under-display camera (UDC) at CES 2026, scheduled for January 6th to 9th in Las Vegas. This development is reportedly aimed at the automotive sector. The company claims to have enhanced image quality, addressing a major drawback of UDCs, which is that the camera is positioned beneath the display.
UDCs typically suffer from a 30% reduction in image quality due to the obstruction caused by OLED panels. However, LG Innotek has reportedly developed AI-based image quality restoration technology that utilizes various algorithms, such as deblurring and denoising, to improve image quality in real-time. The company asserts that its UDC can achieve image quality that is over 99% comparable to images taken without a display.
The LG under-display camera features a resolution of 1.5MP, while Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 includes a 4MP under-display camera. The lower resolution in LG’s camera is said to enhance reliability in vehicles, where safety is a priority. This suggests that LG may have intentionally reduced the resolution, potentially indicating that the company has the capability to create higher-resolution UDCs for other applications, such as smartphones.
Additionally, LG is reportedly a supplier for Apple, which may incorporate this UDC technology in future devices, including the iPhone 20 and the anticipated iPhone Fold. It remains uncertain whether these upcoming iPhones will utilize LG’s new UDC technology, but its advancements seem promising.
