WILLISTON, Fla. – Williston city leaders approved a measure on Tuesday that enables the establishment of a city-owned internet provider set to begin operations in early 2026.
Earlier this spring, the city council voted to secure a $4.6 million loan to fund the installation of fiber optic cables from Performance Services, Inc. Construction is currently in progress, and according to the city’s IT director, Aaron Mills, the internet service is expected to be operational within the coming months.
The council unanimously passed the measure to make Williston an internet service provider, with only Mayor Charles Goodman, who does not vote on resolutions, opposing it. Goodman expressed concerns regarding the long-term viability of fiber technology, questioning whether it would still be effective in two decades.
While Goodman is apprehensive about the potential financial burden on taxpayers from repaying the loan, Mills is optimistic that the service will generate a profit within the next four years, noting that residents are eager for improved internet access. Mills mentioned receiving frequent inquiries from residents asking when the service will be available.
Tuesday’s vote was described by Mills as a procedural requirement, as state laws mandate public votes to establish a city-run service provider.
Only customers of Williston’s utilities will have access to the new fiber optic internet service.
